NHRF was founded on December 10, 2008 to protect, uphold and strengthen the rights of traditionally exploited and oppressed marginalized social segments of Tribals, Dalits, Manorities, Women, children and victims of violations.

 NHRF was formed as an effort to have a common platform of individuals and organizations that have been fighting for the cause of human rights in India.

Since its inception, NHRF has been working on the standards established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration on the Rights to Development the International Covenant on the Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Convention on the Rights of the child, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and other international human rights instruments.
